SUPPORT THE MIGRANT LABOURERS AT REDZONE:

May 22, 2020.

The migrant labourers who came to Tamil Nadu as construction workers from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Mumbai, Bihar and Rajasthan were tremendously affected by the COVID19 pandemic. Most of them were residing near Central, Parrys, Periamet, Choolai and various other locations in Chennai. Due to sudden lockdown, they lost their jobs, they became wageless, don’t even had savings, and were not even able to afford for their daily food and other basic needs. Due to the lockdown of transport facilities, they were not able to return to their hometown. Most of the migrant labourers started walking to the hometowns even without food and water. Their children were severely affected. Some of them even travelled in the heavy vehicles and trucks risking their lives. They travelled for hours in these vehicles in groups. Some of them lost their lives in accidents during this mishap.

Their stories were sad. When we spoke to them, “they told that even if they die, we will die in our hometown.” The house owners asked them to vacate their houses as they could not pay their rent. They were all struggling for their livelihood. Today we distributed dry rations kit worth 1200 rupees (18 first quality provisions) to 15 families of migrant labourers at Periamet, Chennai. Each family had at least 7 to 8 members.

Social distance maintained 100%

Sanitation well established.

Mask and gloves were worn by all the volunteers.

During the lockdown when we called Iyappan, who is an auto driver to help us with the distribution, he burst out in tears saying that he has lost his livelihood due to this pandemic and could not even afford for food to his family. Like him, there were many auto rickshaw drivers residing near his house. So, we authenticated the request and distributed dry rations kit worth 1200 rupees (18 first quality provisions) to 20 families of autorickshaw drivers at Saidapet, Chennai. Each family had at least 3 to 4 members.

Social distance maintained 100%

WEEKLY ACTIVITY

 May 26, 2020 to JUNE 1st Week

The sanitary workers were on road cleaning the garbages and they worked day and night cleaning the roads with the Chennai Corporation, sprinkling sanitizers on the roads and in the red zones, hospitals and wherever needed. They worked without any rest all the days. They are the frontline warriors and the superheroes who supported the crisis with their manpower.

The sanitary workers whom we identified were the soul breadwinners of the families. They were in financial crisis. Other members of the family had lost their jobs. Even many of them were struggling to pay their rent. Similarly, the acting car drivers and the daily wagers were the victims of this crisis and they were paralyzed by this situation. The request came from various locations of the Chennai. After identification by our Core Team, we distributed dry rations kits worth 1200 rupees (18 first quality provisions) to 26 families in Tambaram, Chitlapakkam and Saidapet in one week time. June 17, 2020

Our heart beats only for love! Your Kindness is Blessed Forever!

These visually impaired identified by us were the soul breadwinners of their families. There were at least 2 visually impaired in a family and every family had at least 1 child or 2 children. All of them were educated, from 10th grade to undergraduates, qualified enough to get a job.  During normal time, they used to sell Agarbathi (incents sticks), sweet candies, ginger candies, ration card covers, bank book covers, books etc.. in the local trains, buses, other public transports, and also in the worship places and where the public usually gathers a lot.

Due to the COVID19 Pandemic, they had lost their jobs and were struggling for their livelihood. They didn’t even have to afford for one-time meal. They were not able to pay their rents for their house and could not fulfill the basic needs of their children. In fact, they were not even able to buy milk for their children.

After identification by our Core Team, we distributed dry rations kits worth 1200 rupees (18 first quality provisions) to approximately 25 Visually Impaired families at Kundrathur, Mangadu Road, Sivanthangal, Anakaputhur, Redhills at Chennai and Thiruvallur districts.

It is yet another milestone for us to take up an International Project from The SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA TAMIL MANDRAM to help our fellow being.

Project Future India Trust and Namdhesam Foundation had been on the field since the First Lockdown supporting the vulnerable communities – Migrant Labourers, Differently Abled (Partially Paralyzed, Visually Impaired, Mentally Retarded), Transgenders, Marginalized Women, Single Parents, Destitute Widows, Daily Wagers all over Chennai and Thiruvallur Districts even in RED ZONES.

We made sure that once we get the request, we cross check twice to identify the soul breadwinners from the above population and reach them in person to ensure that we support the families that was not even able to have a single meal a day because we believe there is always a difference between stocking up food materials and not having food material to cook a single meal. We started distributing food packets to the Migrant Labourers and then shifted to dry rations to support their entire family. We are giving DRY RATION RELIEF KITS (Bag of Hopes) worth 1200/- each on an average with 19 provisions of first quality.

Why San Francisco Bay Area Tamil Mandram had chosen us  – Project Future India and Nam Dhesam Foundation ?

Observing us supporting the vulnerable communities since the first lockdown and seeing our transparency in reaching the needy, San Francisco Bay Area Tamil Mandram came forward to fund us to support 335 families (Srilankan Refugees, Differently Abled, Marginalized Women, and Transgenders) with the Dry Ration Kits worth 600 rupees each.
